Two newly restored films from the doyen of feminist filmmaking are set for VOD release.
Agnès Varda made the relatively neglected “Jane B. By Agnès V.” and “Kung-Fu Master!” in 1988, with neither a U.S. theatrical release at the time.
The factor common to both is the Jane B. of the former film’s title: actress and singer Jane Birkin. “Jane B. By Agnès V.” is a playful, expressionistic portrait of Birkin described by Varda as “an imaginary bio-pic.” (One delightful fantasy sequence sees Birkin and Laura Betti take on the roles of Laurel and Hardy). In “Kung-Fu Master!” Birkin portrays single mom Mary-Jane, who finds herself falling in love with 14 year-old Julien (played by Varda’s real-life son Mathieu). It’s a real family affair, in fact, with Birkin’s daughters, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, also appearing in the film.
“Jane B. By Agnès V.” and “Kung-Fu Master!” will be available to both old and new admirers of Varda’s work starting February 2 on Amazon Video. Both restorations are also set to be released on iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, Vimeo on Demand, Xbox and Blu-Ray on March 8.
