Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch: A Glimpse of the Future We’re Fighting for

Not too long ago, it seemed as though Variety had never heard of a woman director other than Nicole Holofcener. But its “10 Directors to Watch” list for 2013 gives female filmmakers a much fairer turn, with five of the eleven directors singled out for recognition being women. (A directing duo occupies one of the slots.)

Here are the women “Directors to Watch”:

Amma Asante, Belle

Clio Barnard, The Selfish Giant

Maya Forbes, Infinitely Polar Bear

Gita Pullapilly, co-director with Aron Gaudet, Beneath the Harvest Sky

Gren Wells, The Road Within

Noteworthily, Asante and Pullapilly are also directors of color.

We’re not naive enough to think that one list will make much difference in an industry that’s proven mule-headedly resistant to change, but this list is definitely a glimpse of the future we’re fighting for.
