Variety’s 2016 Power of Women Event will celebrate five women who have been named as Lifetime Impact Honorees: Academy Award-winning actresses Julianne Moore and Lupita Nyong’o, everyone’s favorite ballerina Misty Copeland, fashion designer Vera Wang and news pundit Megyn Kelly. These leaders are being recognized for their achievements in philanthropy.
The event will be held on April 8 in New York City.
Moore is being honored for her work with Everytown for Gun Safety, a movement to end gun violence and Nyong’o for her efforts with Mother Health International, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support to children and pregnant women in areas affected by war, disaster and poverty.
Copeland, who made history as the first African-American principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre, is being recognized for her contributions to Project Plié, an initiative to increase racial and ethnic representation in ballet by training and supporting ballet students from underrepresented communities. (To learn more about Copeland’s own journey as a dancer, check out the recently released doc “A Ballerina’s Tale.”)
Wang is being championed for her involvement with the Youth Anxiety Center, which endeavors to understand how anxiety affects youth and young adults. The Center also offers treatment and services.
Kelly is being celebrated for her work with Childhelp, a nonprofit that helps victims of child abuse.
