The message today is: never underestimate the power of fandom.
After series creator, Rob Thomas, launched the Veronica Mars Kickstarter movie fund on March 13th with a $2 million goal and an April 12th deadline, the internet exploded.
Veronica Mars fans shared the page all over social media and in less than a day, the funds to make the movie had already been raised. As of this morning, the have raised over $3 million dollars, one of the largest Kickstarter projects thus far. The film will begin pre-production immediately for a shoot this summer, with a targeted 2014 release.
Thomas may have just unknowingly created a paradigm shift in Hollywood in terms of Kickstarter funding studio projects. Warner Brothers owns the rights to Veronica Mars and agreed to be on board via legal work, digital distribution and a limited theatrical run if Thomas could prove fan interest. It’ll be interesting to see how Kickstarter plus fan demand could potentially change studio-driven works.
