Noomi Rapace and Vicky Jewson are reuniting for another female-led action pic based on a true story. Variety confirmed the news. Directed by Jewson, “Sylvia” will see Rapace starring as Mossad’s most famous female agent, Sylvia Rafael.
South African-born Rafael “rose to prominence in Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. She was noted for her intelligence work in locating Ali Hassan Salameh, the leader of Palestine’s Black September organization and the figure behind the murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics,” the source details. “But the mission led to her involvement in the infamous Lillehammer affair, in which an innocent Moroccan waiter was mistakenly identified as Salameh and killed by Rafael’s team. Rafael was tried in Norway and imprisoned. She died in South Africa in 2005.” Jewson is co-writing the script.
Jewson developed “Sylvia” via WestEnd Films under the company’s WeLove banner. WestEnd will be introducing the project to buyers at Cannes.
Rapace and Jewson are among “Sylvia’s” producers. The pair previously collaborated on “Close,” a Netflix thriller inspired by the life of the world’s leading female bodyguard, Jacquie Davis. The pic dropped on the streamer earlier this year.
“As a director I am interested in telling the stories of strong layered female protagonists in genre films,” Jewson told us. “I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s as a huge fan of action films and thrillers. Subsequently most of my heroes were men — there were very few stories about women. I was driven to make the movies I wanted to see growing up, and to bring more authentic female characters to genre film.”
Jewson’s feature credits include “Born of War” and “Lady Godiva.”
Best known for starring in the Swedish big screen adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” series, former “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Rapace has gone on to star in films such as “Prometheus” and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”
