“Vida” has won a GLAAD Media Award, an Impact Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and a SXSW Audience Award. Now Tanya Saracho, the creator of the Starz dramedy, is set to be honored at this month’s Outfest Legacy Awards Gala: A Benefit to Protect Our Past and Build Our Future.
Set to be held October 27 in Los Angeles, the Legacy Awards helps raise funds for Outfest’s filmmaking courses, screenwriting labs, leadership training, workshops, and more. Rita Moreno, Laverne Cox, Jill Soloway, Lisa Cholodenko, and Hilary Swank are among the previous honorees.
“Our honorees for this year’s Outfest Legacy Awards Gala have built such remarkable careers on the premise that authentic and multidimensional queer characters and storylines allow audiences to find pathways of connection via their own humanity and shared experiences, regardless of their own race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, or gender,” said Outfest executive director Damien S. Navarro.”We call that empathy and acceptance!”
Saracho also showruns and exec produces “Vida.” The series centers on sisters Lyn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma (Mishel Prada), who return home to East LA after their mother’s death. In addition to its culturally-specific storylines, “Vida” is known for its queer representation. It’s only at Vida’s funeral that Lyn and Emma find out that their mother was married to a woman, Eddy (Ser Anzoategui). The bar they ran together was an unofficial hangout for lesbian Latinx women. Although she’s tight-lipped about her personal life, Emma is also queer.
“Vida” wrapped up its second season earlier this year and has been renewed for a third, which is expected to air next summer.
Saracho previously wrote for and co-produced “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Looking.” Among her upcoming projects is “Brujas,” a series following four Chicago-based Afro-Caribbean/Latinx women and their growing relationship with the Bruja movement. She’s a founding member of the feminist theater collective The Kilroys and has penned plays “El Nogalar” and “Enfrascada.”
