Amy Schumer has become a star by being one of the funniest people alive about feminism, but recent events have forced her to publicly embrace other politics as well.
After a man killed and injured nine others before turning his gun on himself at a “Trainwreck” screening last month, Amy Schumer and her Senator cousin Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have teamed up on the issue of gun violence. The senior Senator has been a long-time gun-control advocate, and now Amy Schumer is promising to speak out on the issue as well.
“We’re here today to say enough is
enough to mass shooting in our schools, on college campuses, our
military bases and even in our movie theaters,” said the comedian during a joint press conference. “These
shootings have gotta stop, I don’t know how else to say it. Maybe the
worst part about all this is that there is a common-sense way to stop
mass shootings. There are many ways.”
“We never know why people choose to do
these things,” she continued, “but, sadly, we always find out how, how the shooter got their
gun. It’s often something that should haven’t happened in the first
place, and today’s push makes so much sense because it seeks to address
the ‘how.’ We need a background check system without holes and fatal
flaws. We need one with accurate information that protects us like a
firewall. The critics scoff and say well, there’s no way to stop crazy
people from doing crazy things, but they’re wrong. There is a way to stop
them. Preventing dangerous people from getting guns is very possible.
We have common-sense solutions.”
“These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence,” she said, “but I can promise you they will not be my last.”
