Watch: Ava DuVernay Directs Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Mary J. Blige in Apple Music Spot

There was much to cheer about last night’s Emmy awards, but one of the biggest highlights of the night happened during the commercials.

Apple Music debuted an Ava DuVernay-helmed spot with Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson and Mary J. Blige playing themselves. The premise is simple: they’re just three incredibly talented and successful friends hanging out at Blige’s manse, jammin’ to oldies. Washington is forced to extol Apple’s “Instant Boyfriend Mixtape Service,” but given Olivia Pope’s romantic history, a night alone with music or dancing with a couple of girlfriends sounds a lot nicer than another goopy-eyed fight about being star-crossed lovers with an adulterer or an assassin.

DuVernay tweeted that the spot starring her trio of “queens” is the first of three, so be on the lookout for more.
