The 93rd annual Academy Awards marks the first time that two women have been nominated alongside one another in the Best Director category: Chloé Zhao is being recognized for “Nomadland” and Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman.” Zhao and Fennell are just just a couple of the history-making number of women up for honors this year. Women received 76 nominations in 2021, a record for any given year. Academy Museum trustee Diane von Furstenberg and the Academy Museum have released a video featuring dozens of the nominees celebrating this milestone.
“I’m so honored to be sharing space with you all,” Garrett Bradley, who is up for Best Documentary Feature for “Time,” tells her fellow nominees.
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” breakout Maria Bakalova, who is in the running for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, emphasizes that women “don’t need to change ourselves or our bodies just to fit society’s role or vision for us.”
Nominated for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Mia Neal says that she’s “excited about the future.” She explains, “I’m excited that this nomination can inspire so many women of color — and men, for that matter. Just people of color, period. Asian women, Black trans women — people who don’t fit that traditional mold of those who are known to be recognized at this level can now see us and understand that that glass ceiling has been broken.”
Deadline reports that Breaking the Oscars Ceiling, “the first of the Academy Museum’s pre-opening virtual programs, which are conceived as digital prologues to the museum’s core exhibition,” will take place today, April 22, at 7 p.m. PT/ 10 p.m. EST. Moderated by Jacqueline Stewart, the event will include conversations with four trailblazers on the Oscars stage: Sophia Loren, Whoopi Goldberg, Marlee Matlin, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Registration for the event is free, but you must RSVP.
