“Becoming” sees former First Lady Michelle Obama figuring out who she is — and who she wants to be — following eight years served in the White House alongside her husband, Barack. Directed by Nadia Hallgren (“She’s the Ticket”), the upcoming Netflix documentary follows the lawyer and author as she embarks on a 34-city tour “that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories,” according to its official synopsis. That journey presents Obama with the opportunity to openly and honestly share her own story.
Asked what it’s like to “get back on track of your normal life,” Obama answers, “It’s a whole new track. It’s not going back. It’s just all different, and it’s different forever,” she emphasizes. “It’s not getting back on track, but it’s creating my next track. I’m doing what you’re doing. I’m figuring out what do I want to do, what do I care about. It takes time to process your life and figure out what it all means,” she observes. “So little of who I am happened in those eight years. So much more of who I was happened before.”
In a statement about the doc, Obama said, “Those months I spent traveling — meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe — drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with. In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud.”
Michelle and Barack Obama have a production deal with Netflix. Their exec producing credits include Oscar winner “American Factory” and Sundance winner “Crip Camp.”
“Becoming” shares a name with Obama’s best-selling 2018 memoir. You can catch the doc on Netflix beginning May 6.
