Paige is straight, Sasha is gay. Paige suddenly has a fiance, Sasha is still alone.
The first of these two situations isn’t remotely a problem. The second one, though, creates a riff between the nearing-thirty besties.
Gillian Jacobs and Leighton Meester star as Paige and Sasha, respectively, in Susanna Fogel’s Life Partners, which explores the growing pains all long-term friendship suffer when life forces change.
In an interview with Women and Hollywood about Life Partners, Fogel expressed a fascination with female friendships. “They seem defined by a combination of codependent intimacy and subtle, constant passive-aggressiveness,” she said. “And more generally, as a director I was excited about telling a story where the women are layered protagonists: witty without being glib, emotional without being overly vulnerable, or letting a dude define their self-worth. On a related note, the idea of normalizing a best friendship between a lesbian and a straight girl without overly politicizing their sexualities felt exciting and true to the zeitgeist now.”
Fogel directed the script and penned it with her writing partner Joni Lefkowitz.
Life Partners will open November 6.
