Watch: Ingrid Bergman Speaks in New Cannes Doc

Ingrid Bergman’s status as a screen legend is secure — her three Academy Awards can attest to that — but during the actress’s lifetime, the “Casablanca” star was just as famous for leaving Hollywood to return to her native Europe.

Bergman’s departure from Los Angeles was under less-than-favorable and highly sexist circumstances: she was virtually blacklisted after being caught in an adulterous affair with Roberto Rossellini and was called an “instrument of evil” on the Senate floor. Her farewell to Hollywood is the focus of a clip from the new documentary “Ingrid Bergman, In Her Own Words,” narrated by up-and-comer Alicia Vikander, which will debut at Cannes 2015 (May 13–24).

In addition to the doc, the French festival’s celebration of actress’s centenary include the “Ingrid Bergman Tribute,” a show based on Bergman’s biography and her correspondence with Rossellini, who became her second husband.

Bergman’s daughter, Isabella Rosselini, will also head the Un Certain Regard jury this year.
