“That’s a mistake the whole world makes. They never take the girls serious,” says Lovie Simone in a new clip of “Selah and the Spades.” Tayarisha Poe’s feature debut sees the “Greenleaf” actress playing Selah Summers, the Queen Bee of her elite Pennsylvania boarding school.
Long accustomed to being underestimated and told what to wear, how to act, and who to be, the perfectionist has found a means of expressing herself without unwanted input: as senior spirit captain. Selah and her cheer squad choose their outfits and choreograph their own routines. The overachievers also keep busy by supplying students with drugs and pills.
“I found the experience of attending boarding school to be, in retrospect, incredibly specific and fascinatingly odd. I wanted to capture the essence of that experience while also crafting a story that was filled with kids who looked like me and who did — to be frank — whatever the fuck they wanted to do,” Poe told us. “I wanted to write a story starring a bunch of kids of color who were limited only by themselves. I wanted them to be powerful and dangerous and larger than life.”
“Selah and the Spades” made its world premiere at Sundance 2019. You can catch the pic on Amazon Prime Video beginning April 17. Check out the spot to hear Selah sound off on how the school tells girls to cover their shoulders and legs “because they can’t tell boys to keep it in their pants.”
