A new video from #makeitfair, a project calling for gender equality in the entertainment industry, politics and beyond has us nodding our heads in agreement while laughing out loud. Rita Wilson, Mamie Gummer (“The Good Wife”) and Kathleen Chalfant (“The Affair”) are included in a chorus of women who share startling statistics about women’s roles, and lack of representation, in government and film.
What makes the video funny — and offers a bit of a plot twist — is that the women deliver this news as if men are the ones being oppressed because they don’t get to have 100% of everything, though the data shared in the video reveals that in many instances they come disturbingly close. For example, “in the past few years, only 93 percent of popular films were directed by men,” and “only 80 percent were written by them.”
The video was conceived and written by Patricia Noonan, Nadia Quinn, and Emily Tarver, and directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt. The entire team behind the video is comprised of women: original music by Zoe Sarnak and Nadia Quinn, music direction by Zoe Sarnak, cinematography and editing by Crystal Arnette, and produced by Patricia Noonan, Nadia Quinn, and Emily Tarver in association with Erica Rotstein.
