The best-performing movie of 2013 was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, starring Jennifer Lawrence as the ass-kicking, fast-thinking Katniss Everdeen.
And yet we’re still in the position of having to convince Hollywood execs that female-led movies make money, even though some of the biggest box-office hits of this summer — Maleficent, Lucy, Tammy, and The Fault in Our Stars — all starred women. In a video for the CBC, our Melissa Silverstein, who’s currently at the Toronto Film Festival, talked about the recent changes in the film industry that have largely kept female protagonists off the big screen — and why Hollywood’s “conventional wisdom” about the profitability of movies about women is dead wrong.
