Watch: ‘SNL’ Star Sasheer Zamata Becomes ACLU Celebrity Ambassador, Talks Women’s Rights

Actress and comedian Sasheer Zamata has been named a celebrity ambassador for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Zamata’s title will see the “Saturday Night Live” featured player promoting the ACLU’s work combating gender inequality through advocacy and public education.

“It’s so wonderful that women continue to break down barriers and change societal expectations, but women still suffer discrimination for their gender, class and race,” said Zamata. “I am honored to continue the fight for equal economic opportunities, the right to choose and an end to gender-based violence by serving as an ACLU Celebrity Ambassador.”

“We are thrilled to name Sasheer Zamata as our newest celebrity ambassador,” commented Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU. “She is the perfect voice for the next generation, and especially for those looking to effect real and lasting change on women’s rights issues.”

As part of her ambassadorship, Zamata stars in a new ACLU video called “Sasheer Zamata Says Women’s Rights Still a BFD!” The video features a mostly well-meaning but woefully ignorant white man who Zamata schools on race, gender and class privilege, which she says he cannot control. “What you can control,” she explains, “is how you use that privilege. You can use it to help others.” Watch the video below, especially if you need reminding that women’s rights are still a big fucking deal.

You can still sign the ACLU’s petition to end gender-biased hiring practices in Hollywood.
