Watch: Women & Hollywood Founder Melissa Silverstein Talks Gender Equality

Melissa Silverstein

Earlier this summer, Women and Hollywood’s Founder and Editor-in-Chief Melissa Silverstein spoke at the Natalie Miller Fellowship event in Melbourne, Australia.

The Fellowship, named in honor of influential Aussie Natalie Miller, celebrates and supports emerging female leaders in the Australian screen community.

Melissa was invited to speak on account of her advocacy work with Women and Hollywood, which includes not only the blog, but also her book on women directors (“In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing”), “The Ms. Factor: The Power of Female-Driven Content,” a collaboration between the PGA Women’s Impact Network and Women and Hollywood, and The Athena Film Festival, a celebration of women and leadership, among many other efforts.

At the event, held July 27, Melissa discussed gender (in)equality in the film business, both onscreen and behind-the-scenes. She addressed why gender matters, and offered recommendations for how we can work towards a more inclusive industry.

Check out footage from the event below, which includes Melissa’s full talk, and a Q&A with Sue Maslin, the producer behind “The Dressmaker,” Jocelyn Moorhouse’s upcoming dark comedy starring Kate Winslet. The video is just over an hour-long. You can find out more about the Natalie Miller Fellowship here.
