Weekly Update for January 23: Women Centric, Directed and Written Films Playing Near You

Films About Women Opening This Week

Girlhood — Written and Directed by Celine Sciamma

French writer-director Céline Sciamma has a small but sturdy body of work that addresses how girls navigate a culture that can be incredibly hostile to them. She does it with nuance, intelligence, and a ton of bravery. Her third film, Girlhood, focuses on a teenage girl on the margins who is looking for a place to fit in. This story, just like the Oscar-nominated film Boyhood, is universal. (Melissa Silverstein)

Above and Beyond (doc) — Directed by Roberta Grossman

In 1948, just three years after the liberation of the Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia, and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal — “volunteers from abroad” — this rag-tag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride. Above and Beyond is their story. (Press materials)
