The Heat – Written by Katie Dippold

Yesterday, I wrote a piece that gave my argument about why you need to go and see The Heat this weekend. What I didn’t share since I
was embargoed was the fact that I really liked the movie and it made me laugh so hard, harder than I have done in a long, long time.

I want to be very clear. Even though this film stars women, it is a big Hollywood movie. It is going for very broad strokes. I
congratulate Katie Dippold for her big screen debut as a screenwriter, but you can tell it has the typical problem of most Hollywood
movies — too many cooks in the kitchen. It’s a bit all over the place and the story is not perfect but that didn’t bother me because
that is what I expect from studio films. And I still enjoyed myself. Read more…

Byzantium

Two mysterious women seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort. Clara (Gemma Arterton) meets lonely Noel (Daniel Mays), who provides
shelter in his deserted guesthouse, Byzantium. Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) befriends Frank (Caleb Landry Jones) and tells him their lethal
secret. They were born 200 years ago and survive on human blood. In the small, quiet town, people start to die. And the past that the
girls have been running from for so long, finally catches up with them – with astonishing consequences. (from press materials)

July 5th

A Girl And A Gun – Directed by Cathryne Czubek (doc)

A Girl and A Gun presents a feminine perspective on an object whose history is deeply bound up with men and masculinity. Filmed
throughout the US, this documentary delves into the psyche of the American gun world to investigate how women relate to guns and gun
culture.

Reaching far beyond Hollywood’s hypersexualized femme fatales, the film candidly explores the modern American woman through intimate
portraits encompassing issues of protection, power, feminism, and violence. A Girl and A Gun is a complex and thoughtful meditation on
a deadly serious issue. (from film website)

Absence

Doctors are baffled when a young expectant mother Liz (Erin Way), wakes to find her nearly-to-term pregnancy disappear overnight. The
police are investigating the situation as a missing child case and only her husband, Rick (Eric Matheny) and brother, Evan (Ryan Smale)
trust her version of events. Told in the “found footage” style, Evan looks for answers by filming his sister’s experience. The trio
embarks upon a trip to the mountains to escape the attention of the police and prying neighbors. When the trip spins out of control
they realize that whatever happened with Liz and her baby isn’t over. None of them are safe. (From Press Materials)

Just Like A Woman – Written by Joelle Touma and Marion Doussat

Just Like a Woman tells the poignant tale of two women, barely more than casual acquaintances, who, upon escaping the prisons of their
unhappy marriages, embark on a revealing journey of self discovery which leads them to the importance – and true meaning – of
friendship. (From Press Materials)
