Weekly Update June 7th: Women Centric, Directed and Written Films Playing Near You

nullFilms About Women Opening This Weekend

Tiger Eyes

If you are a woman of my age, you grew up reading Judy Blume She was your touchstone. Now this weekend the first of her novels to make it to the big screen, Tiger Eyes, opens. Tiger Eyes tells the story of Davey (Willa Holland) a teen uprooted from her home in Atlantic City to Los Alamos after the death of her father. The movie explores the loss of a parent and how to regain your moorings after the rug is pulled out from under your feet and you no longer know how to stand up. I liked that the movie didn’t try to hard to be flashy or trendy. There are no kids texting or trashing each other. These are just kids dealing with life, and life as a teenager even without the baggage sucks. This is a movie any adult should be grateful for if they have a teen or tween in his or her life. It’s a movie that you can talk about. It’s a movie that provokes feelings. When I walked out I said to myself that is exactly the type of movie that I would expect to be made from a Judy Blume book. And that made me smile. (Melissa Silverstein)
