Beyond the Hills

Cristian Mungiu’s harrowing but
starkly beautiful new film is set in an isolated Orthodox convent in Romania
where Alina (Cristina Flutur) has been reunited with her childhood friend
Voichita (Cosmina Stratan) after spending several years in Germany. Alina wants
to leave and go to back Germany, and wants Voichita, a novice nun, to go with
her. But Voichita has found refuge in faith and a family in the nuns and their
priest (Valeriu Andriuta) and refuses. When Alina challenges the priest in an
attempt to win back Voichita’s affection, she is suspected of being possessed.
Mungiu based his gripping drama on a case of alleged demonic possession that
occurred in a Romanian monastery in 2005. (From Press Materials)

Don’t Stop Belivin’: Everyman’s

DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’: EVERYMAN’S
JOURNEY, directed by Ramona S. Diaz, follows the real life rock ‘n’ roll fairy
tale of Filipino Arnel Pineda, who was plucked from YouTube to become the front
man for iconic American rock band Journey. In this Cinderella story for the
ages, Arnel, having overcome a lifetime’s worth of hardships, must now navigate

Gut Renovation – Directed by Su
Friedrich (doc)

Welcome to Williamsburg, New York’s
new bohemia. Or is it? In the late 1980s artists moved into this working class
neighborhood, populated by small manufacturers, Polish butchers, and auto
repair shops, just across the East River. SoHo took 30 years to change from an
artists’ bohemia to an art gallery hotspot, to an outdoor shopping mall;
Williamsburg’s demise has been much faster, due in part to a 2005 zoning law
change. (from the press materials)

Emperor – Co-Written by Vera Blasi

As General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy
Lee Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he
assigns an expert in Japanese culture – and psychological warfare – General
Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question
hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people
but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught between the high-wire
political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the
mysterious school teacher (Eriko Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers
can be certain only that the tricky subterfuge about to play out will forever
change the history of two nations and his heart.  (From Press Materials)

Escape Fire – Co-Directed by Susan
Froemke – 3/10/13 at 8:00pm on CNN/U.S.

The film reveals flaws in the notion
that the healthcare delivered via America’s fragmented patchwork of facilities,
practitioners, and insurers offers good value for its outcomes. Through the
real-life experiences of physicians and patients, Escape Fire shows the
tremendous pressure providers feel to reduce costs and limit time with patients – and the frustrations of patients struggling with preventable conditions that
are often created or exacerbated by insufficient or inappropriate care. (From
