WGA Awards: Emerald Fennell Wins Original Screenplay Prize for “Promising Young Woman”

"Promising Young Woman"

Emerald Fennell took home one of the top prizes at this weekend’s Writers Guild Awards (WGA Awards). She received the Original Screenplay honor for “Promising Young Woman,” her critically acclaimed thriller about an ex-med student who devotes her life to teaching sexual predators a lesson.

“I wish I could be in the room and see everyone in person. As it is, I will say thank from my bleak writers room in England,” Fennell joked at the virtual ceremony, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Fennell is up for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for “Promising Young Woman”; she is the sole woman nominated in the category. She received a nod for Best Director as well. This year marks the first time that race has two women nominees — Fennell and “Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao. “Promising Young Woman” netted nominations for Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Actress (Carey Mulligan), too.

Among the myriad other accolades Fennell has scored for “Promising Young Woman” are Golden Globe nods for Best Screenplay and Best Director, a BAFTA nomination for Best Screenplay, and a DGA nom for Outstanding Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film.

Fennell previously served as showrunner on Season 2 of “Killing Eve.” The multi-hyphenate’s acting credits include “The Crown” and “Call the Midwife.” She portrays Camilla Parker Bowles in the former, for which she is nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.
