WGA Nominations: Greta Gerwig, Dee Rees, and More

“Lady Bird”

Count Writers Guild of America members among “Lady Bird’s” many fans. The WGA has announced nominees for its annual awards ceremony, and Greta Gerwig’s universally acclaimed coming-of-age story about a Sacramento teen who dreams of moving to New York scored a nod for Original Screenplay.

Of the five films nominated in the category, three are penned or co-penned by women: “Lady Bird,” rom-com “The Big Sick,” co-written by Emily V. Gordon, and otherworldly fairy tale “The Shape of Water,” co-written by Vanessa Taylor.

Female scribes didn’t fare so well in the Adapted Screenplay category. “Mudbound” director and co-writer Dee Rees is the only woman to receive a nomination. All four of the films up for Documentary Screenplay were written by men.

Gerwig and Taylor’s scripts are nominated for Golden Globes at this Sunday’s ceremony.

While the “The Big Sick” was snubbed by the Globes entirely, the film, inspired by Gordon’s own relationship with co-writer and husband Kumail Nanjiani, has received a lot of love from critics and audiences alike. The script is up for a Critics Choice Award and an Indie Spirit Award, and received a nod from the Gotham Awards. The pic was also a box office success, grossing over $55 million worldwide on a budget of $5 million.

“Mudbound” is up for two Golden Globes: Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress (Mary J. Blige).
