Another woman-directed film has joined the Oscar race in the International Feature category. Screen Daily confirmed that Austria submitted Ulrike Kofler’s fertility drama “What We Wanted” as its pick for the 93rd edition of the Academy Awards.
Written by Kofler and Sandra Bohle, “What We Wanted” tells the story of a couple dealing with fertility issues who find their marriage “tested on a vacation to a Sardinian resort — and the family next door only adds to the tension,” the source hints. Slated for release on Netflix November 11, the project marks Kofler’s feature directorial debut.
Other titles recently submitted in the category include Jasmila Zbanic’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?” and Agnieszka Holland’s “Charlatan.” The former, selected by Bosnia, follows a UN translator trying to save her family when the Serbian army takes over their small town, and the latter, submitted by the Czech Republic, is based on a true story and centers on a Czech healer dedicating to treating illness using medicinal plants. Julie Schroell’s “River Tales,” a documentary about an actor and teacher in Nicaragua who stages a play with his students exploring the history of the San Juan River, is also in the running. It is representing Luxembourg.
The 2021 Academy Awards is slated to take place April 25. Nominations will be announced March 15.
