Where’d You Go Bernadette Gets Writers and Producers

nullOne of the best books I read over the holidays and last year is Maria Semple's Where'd You Go Bernadette?  It is an original, funny, touching, moving story of a 50 year old woman, Bernadette, who winds up in Seattle and becomes something of a hermit after a series of professional and personal setbacks.  The thing about the book is that is all about creativity and how when people who are uniquely talented need to create or they lose touch with themselves and as one character says "become a menace to themselves and society."

I know I can't do the book justice because it was just so good and different.

I was excited to read that it was being made into a movie and will be produced by both Megan Ellison and Nina Jacobson.  But then I read that Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber the team behind 500 Days of Summer would be writing the script.  WHY?  Why isn't Maria Semple writing the script?  She was a writer on Arrested Development.  Other female writers like Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn get to adapt their scripts, so I'm confused as to why Semple did not get the jon.

Maybe she is too busy and didn't want to write it.  Doubtful.  So then my question is, why not hire some other funny female writer?  Why go to two dudes who wrote a quirky romantic comedy.  It just makes no sense to me.  I just wish women had better shots at getting these gigs.  If there is a book that screams female writer it is Where'd You Go Bernadette.  Read it and then tell me it is not a book you think a woman would be better off writing the script for.

Bernadette is seriously the juiciest female character to come along in a long time.  All actresses in their 40s and 50s will be going for her.  The widgets of my mind are going wild thinking about who would be a great Bernadette.  Anyone have ideas?
