Here’s a fun piece of Hollywood and Feminism and it’s a blog called Feminist Ryan Gosling.
Danielle Henderson started the tumblr blog Feminist Ryan Gosling a week ago. In that week (actually it only took a couple of days) the blog has gone viral. There are a variety of reasons why this has struck a nerve including the fact that the blog is smart, funny and different, but it also touches a nerve that gives us hope that one of the hottest actors (both in looks and in career status) could actually be someone us feminists could support.
Danielle said she doesn’t know if Ryan Gosling is a feminist, but I think he really is. That’s another reason why the blog works. And here is my proof.
Last year when Gosling was promoting Blue Valentine he said this is response to the film being slapped with an NC-17 rating.
You have to question a cinematic culture which preaches artistic expression, and yet would support a decision that is clearly a product of a patriarchy-dominant society, which tries to control how women are depicted on screen. The MPAA is okay supporting scenes that portray women in scenarios of sexual torture and violence for entertainment purposes, but they are trying to force us to look away from a scene that shows a woman in a sexual scenario, which is both complicit and complex. It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film.
Any dude that says the quote above is a feminist.
