Women-Centric Panel at Cannes Announced: “Women Make Great Movies: Strategies for Success”

Great news for those attending the Cannes Film Festival. While our recent infographic illustrates how poorly women directors are represented in the festival’s prestigious competition category this year (just like in previous years), attempts are being made to challenge and remedy the situation. The newly launched Support Women Filmmakers coalition, spearheaded by Women and Hollywood’s founder and editor Melissa Silverstein, is one such effort.

A panel presented by The Festival International de Films de Femmes de Créteil and moderated by Melissa has comparable aims: to increase the visibility and recognition of female filmmakers, promote gender equality onscreen and explore ways to create more opportunities for women to direct.

The panel, titled “Women Make Great Movies: Strategies for Success,” will take place May 18. The conversation serves to highlight women directors and celebrate their work. Panelists include Anna Serner (Director, Swedish Film Institute), Cameron Bailey (Artistic Director, Toronto International Film Festival), Kate Kinninmont (MBE Chief Executive, Women in Film & TV (UK)) and Jasmila Žbanić (Filmmaker).

Panelists and attendees will be welcomed by Sophie Deschamps (President, SACD) and an introduction will be offered by Jackie Buet (Founder and Director, Festival International de Films de Femmes).
