Women Directed 41 Percent of New York Film Fest’s 2022 Main Slate

Laura Poitras' "All the Beauty and the Bloodshed" is the Centerpiece film: Nan Goldin

The New York Film Festival (NYFF) has lined up titles from Kelly Reichardt, Claire Denis, Alice Diop, Joanna Hogg, and more for its Main Slate this year. Overall, women directed or co-directed 13 of the 32 Main Slate films, amounting to about 41 percent. That’s not quite gender parity but it’s nothing to sneeze at — and it’s certainly a marked improvement from last year.

As the festival previously announced, Laura Poitras’ new documentary, “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” will serve as the 60th edition’s Centerpiece film. A story about art, politics, addiction, and David v. Goliath battles, the doc chronicles the life of photographer Nan Goldin and her fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for their role in the opioid epidemic.

Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest, the Léa Seydoux-starring romantic drama “One Fine Morning,” is also part of the Main Slate, as are fellow 2022 festival darlings “Stars at Noon” by Denis; “Showing Up” by Reichardt; “The Eternal Daughter” by Hogg; “Saint Omer” by Diop; “Aftersun” by Charlotte Wells; and “Corsage” by Marie Kreutzer.

The prescient “Stonewalling,” co-directed by Huang Ji, will screen in NYFF’s Main Slate, too. The Hunanese-language film spends a year with Lynn, a college student navigating an unplanned pregnancy. She decides against an abortion and plans to give the baby up for adoption; in the intervening months, she struggles to take care of herself and her pregnancy, working at one shitty job after another.

Other NYFF 2022 titles on our radar include Chinonye Chukwu’s “Till,” a biopic about Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till Mobley’s, activism in the wake of his brutal murder. The much anticipated film will make its world premiere at the festival, with plans to host community screenings for high school students.

NYFF runs September 30-October 16 at Lincoln Center and venues across NYC. All of the women-directed and co-directed Main Slate titles are below, courtesy of the fest. Check out NYFF’s website for the full lineup.
