Women weren’t hard to find among the NAACP Awards’ sprawling and maverick nominees in film, television, music, and books.

Three female filmmakers — Ava DuVernay (Selma), Amma Asante (Belle), and Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights) — comprised the majority of the Best Director nods. (Unfortunately, women were shut out entirely in the Best Directing for Television category.)

The Best Picture nominees included Belle, Beyond the Lights, Dear White People, and Selma. Belle and Dear White People were also nominated for Best Indie Picture, as was the film adaptation of the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie novel Half of a Yellow Sun.

On the TV side, Shondaland received several major nominations, including Best Drama nods for Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder (the latter of which is produced by Shonda Rhimes but created and showrun by Peter Nowalk). Mara Brock Akil’s BET series Being Mary Jane, which stars Gabrielle Union, was the fourth Best Drama nominee. Orange is the New Black was the only Best Comedy nominee created by a woman.
