Tina Brown’s Women in the World organization and IFC Center are collaborating on a new women’s festival. According to a press release, the inaugural 51Fest will be held July 18-21 in New York City at the IFC Center and the SVA Theatre. A celebration of women’s voices and stories, it will feature film and TV screenings, performances, in-depth conversations, and special events.
51Fest’s mission is to address the gender gap in storytelling. “Women make up a majority in the United States — nearly 51 percent, as referenced in the festival’s name,” the release notes, “but all too often women’s stories and creative voices have been marginalized.”
“Women make up more than half of our population, and 51Fest puts women where they belong: at the center of the story,” Brown declared.
The festival is an extension of Brown’s Women in the World Summits, international events that bring together activists, artists, businesswomen, entrepreneurs, and more in order to share, amplify, and support women’s perspectives. The latest Summit kicked off April 10 in NYC.
51Fest is headed by Program Director Anne Hubbell, a film industry vet; Executive Director Raphaela Neihausen, of the IFC Center; and Peabody-winning Women in the World Senior Producer Nicole Savini.
“We are proud to partner with Women in the World on launching this important new festival,” Neihausen remarked. “We look forward to presenting one-of-a-kind events that will engage, entertain, and inspire audiences.”
Brown founded Women in the World in 2009. An alumna of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, she created The Daily Beast in 2008. She’s written several books, was honored with an OBE for service to journalism, and hosts the podcast “TBD with Tina Brown.”
51Fest’s full lineup will be unveiled in June. For more information, head over to the festival’s website.
