Despite garden-variety protests from dudes on the internet, two women-only screenings of “Wonder Woman” at the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin have sold out. And, according to Mashable, trolls’ backlash to the special event has just increased awareness and inspired other Drafthouse locations to organize their own women-only screenings. Looks like Diana, Princess of Themyscira is winning yet another battle.
In a nod to Wonder Woman’s homeland, the females-only island of Themyscira — or, perhaps, in recognition of the injustices women face every day — Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse announced its special screening of Patty Jenkins’ superheroine pic earlier this week. “Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying ‘No Guys Allowed’ for one special night at the Alamo Ritz,” the theater’s website reads. “And when we say ‘People Who Identify As Women Only,’ we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.”
If you remember the outrage over the all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot last summer — or if, you know, you are aware that misogyny is real — you won’t be surprised that some men took offense to this.
But Alama Drafthouse wasn’t cowed and even seemed to take some pleasure in pissing off the sexist trolls.
And they’re not stopping there. Alamo Drafthouse creative manager Morgan Hendrix told Mashable, “We are very excited to present select, women-only ‘Wonder Woman’ screenings at Alamo Drafthouse. That providing an experience where women truly reign supreme has incurred the wrath of trolls only serves to deepen our belief that we’re doing something right.” She continued, “As a result, we will be expanding this program across the country and inviting women everywhere to join us as we celebrate this iconic superheroine in our theaters.”
So far, women-only screenings in Dallas, Austin, and D.C. have been announced. Those locations will donate their ticket proceeds to local women’s charities.
“Wonder Woman” opens June 2, one week from today. Visit the Drafthouse website to find women-only screenings near you.
