The Producers Guild of America is recognizing two of 2017’s box office heroines: Diana Prince and Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson. Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” and Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” are among the films up for The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The PGA announced the 11 films nominated for the honor today. The fact that two of them are directed by women is noteworthy. The last time a woman-helmed film has been up for the award was back in 2013 when Kathryn Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty” was nominated.
And there’s more good news: PGA Awards are seen as strong indicators of which films will score Oscar nominations for Best Picture.
Seven of the films in the running feature at least one woman producer on the team. Amy Pascal is nominated for two projects: Jessica Chastain-starrer “Molly’s Game” and newspaper drama “The Post.” “I, Tonya” star Margot Robbie received a nod for producing the Tonya Harding biopic.
The PGA Awards will take place January 20.
