Three of our favorite films by and about women from last year are among the nominees for the 2020 Writers Guild Awards. “Little Women,” “Booksmart,” and “The Kingmaker” scored nods from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay, and Documentary Screenplay, respectively.
Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, “Little Women” is based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved 1868 novel of the same name and follows the March sisters as they battle societal expectations and experience loss and love on their journey to womanhood. Gerwig is the sole woman nominee in the Adapted Screenplay category.
“Booksmart” is penned by Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, and Katie Silberman and marks Olivia Wilde’s feature directorial debut. The coming-of-age comedy centers on overachieving high schoolers who decide to let loose and attend a party the night before they graduate. Krysty Wilson-Cairns is also up for honors in the Original Screenplay category. She co-wrote WWI drama “1917” with director Sam Mendes.
Lauren Greenfield is the only woman in the running for Documentary Screenplay. She’s being recognized for “The Kingmaker,” which she also directed. The doc follows Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines, as she attempts to bring her family back to power.
WGA winners will be announced February 1. Check out all of the nominees over at Deadline.
