Zeitgeist To Release Marcie Begleiter’s Doc About Artist Eva Hesse

nullMarcie Begleiter’s directorial debut, a documentary about sculptor Eva Hess, has been acquired. Zeitgeist Films will distribute "Eva Hesse."

The film chronicles Hesse’s life, which began in Hamburg, though her family fled Germany in 1938 when she was just two years old to escape the Nazis. Eva and her sister were sent to the Netherlands for their protection, and later reunited with their parents in England. The family ended up in New York City, where Hesse later found fame as an artist in the ’60s.

Although she drew and painted, Hesse is best known for her sculptures, which utilized fiberglass, plastics and latex.

Hesse died from a brain tumor when she was just 34 years old.

"[We] have been following this film ever since we were struck by a postcard sent to our office showing Eva with one of her sculptures," said Zeitgeist Co-Presidents Nancy Gerstam and Emily Russo in a statement. "Once we heard her story, we knew we had to share it with audiences, and we think they will be completely captivated as we were."

"Eva Hesse" is scheduled to premiere on April 27 at Film Forum in New York City.
