Zoey Deutch is getting into the debt collecting business. Deadline reports that the “Set It Up” actress just kicked off production on “Buffaloed,” a dark comedy about a debt collector that she’s starring in and producing. Tanya Wexler (“Hysteria”) is directing the indie pic.
Currently shooting in Toronto, “Buffaloed” centers on a hustler determined to escape her hometown of Buffalo. Feeling the weight of crippling debt, Peg (Deutch) resolves to fight for her future and becomes a debt collector herself. It’s not long before she’s waging war with the local kingpin of debt-collecting.
Deutch can currently be seen in Netflix hit “Set It Up.” Directed by Claire Scanlon (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and written by Katie Silberman (“Isn’t It Romantic?), the romantic comedy follows co-workers who plot to make their bosses fall in love. Her other recent credits include “Flower,” “Before I Fall,” and her mother Lea Thompson’s feature directorial debut, “The Year of Spectacular Men.” She produced the latter.
Asked what advice she’d give to those entering the business, Deutch urged, “Don’t be afraid to be ambitious. I don’t know why that word has a bad rap and really, it’s mostly just for women,” she observed. “All it means is that you’re willing to work hard for what you want and love, as far as I’m concerned. So work hard, love what you do, be nice to people, and be ambitious! There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Wexler most recently helmed eps of “The Arrangement” and “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.”
