Zurich Film Festival’s 2019 Edition Includes a Record Number of Women Directors

"Radioactive" will screen

The 15th Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) will be its most female-friendly to date. This year’s edition of the fest features a record number of films by women. According to a press release from ZFF, the program features 57 titles from women, amounting to a 30 percent increase from last year.

Among the features set to screen is “Radioactive,” Marjane Satrapi’s biopic of two-time Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie. Rosamund Pike plays the late physicist and chemist. Also in the program is “My Zoe,” Julie Delpy’s latest, a portrait of a divorced couple dealing with tragedy. Both films are currently playing at the Toronto International Film Festival.

ZFF director Nadja Schildknecht suggested that the fest’s programming is a reflection of who is working behind the scenes. She said that the high number of women-directed films is “probably due in part to the fact that the proportion of women at the ZFF is over 80 percent.”

As previously announced, the fest’s highest honor, the Golden Icon Award, will be bestowed on two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett. Her latest film, Maria Semple adaptation “Where’d You Go Bernadette,” is being screened. The fest is also hosting a retrospective of the Australian actress’ work.

Kristen Stewart is taking home ZFF’s Career Achievement Award and is bringing “Seberg” to the fest. She plays actress and political activist Jean Seberg in the biopic.

ZFF takes place from September 26 to October 6.
