“I feel like I’m ready to be Lacy’s newest personal shopper,” Katy Keene (Lucy Hale) announces in the trailer for her eponymous CW show, a spinoff of hit “Riverdale.” The fashionista and seamstress has been dreaming of the sweet designer store gig since she was a kid. Of course, the realities of the job — such as the toxic work environment — turn out to be a bit different than her expectations.
The difficulties of pursuing artistic dreams seem to be the focus of “Katy Keene.” Her friend Josie (Ashleigh Murray) arrives from Riverdale with hopes of musical fame. She promptly gets drawn into the orbit of possibly-shady music exec Alexander Cabot (Lucien Laviscount), whose family is “right up there with the Rockefellers.”
Meanwhile, Katy and Josie’s actor roommate, Jorge (Jonny Beauchamp), keeps getting rejected at auditions. “Apparently I’m too gay for Broadway,” he laments.
Things are tough, but the spot suggests that the trio and their socialite friend Pepper (Julia Chan) are going to make it after all. Josie in particular inspires her friends to go after what they want. “Watching her pursue her dream, it reminded me I should be doing the same thing,” Katy says.
“Katy Keene” is coming soon to The CW. Maggie Kiley (“Brightest Star”) directed the pilot.
