“Scandal” wrapped its seventh and final season in 2018, but the political thriller was just the beginning for star Kerry Washington and writer and producer Raamla Mohamed’s collaborative journey. The pair are set to reunite on what promises to be another addictive ABC series. The network has put their legal drama, “Reasonable Doubt,” into development. Deadline broke the news.
Counting Washington and Mohamed among its exec producers, “Reasonable Doubt” centers on Charlie Stewart, “the most brilliant and fearless defense attorney in Los Angeles who bucks the justice system at every chance she gets.” Besides her undeniable talent, Charlie is known for her “questionable ethics and wild interpretations of the law.”
Mohamed is penning the script. Before making her name on “Scandal,” she kicked off her career as a production assistant on another Shonda Rhimes show: “Grey’s Anatomy.” She also worked as a medical researcher on Shondaland’s “Off the Map” before joining “Scandal” as a researcher in Season 1. “After being accepted into the Disney-ABC Writing Program, Mohamed returned to ‘Scandal,’ joining the writing staff for season 2 as a Disney fellow, and rising through the ranks to Supervising Producer for the series’ seventh and final season,” the source notes. Mohamed also worked as a writer on “Still Star Crossed.”
Washington’s production company, Simpson Street, recently wrapped production on “Little Fires Everywhere,” Hulu’s limited series adaptation of Celeste Ng’s best-selling novel. Washington stars alongside Reese Witherspoon in the drama. Her producing slate includes Rashida Jones’ adaptation of graphic novel series “Goldie Vance,” the story of a 16-year-old aspiring detective who uncovers an international crime ring. Washington’s also set to star in and produce Eva Longoria’s feature directorial debut, workplace comedy “24-7,” among other projects.
The “Confirmation” star and exec producer can be seen in “American Son.” Now on Netflix, the drama centers on an estranged couple who reunite in a police station to help find their missing son.
