Another woman-directed Jojo Moyes adaptation is in the works. The author’s novels have already served as the source material for Thea Sharrock’s 2016 Emilia Clarke-led box office hit “Me Before You” and Augustine Frizzell’s upcoming romance “The Last Letter From Your Lover,” and now word comes that Catalina Aguilar Mastretta will direct a feature based on Moyes’ New York Times bestseller “The Giver of Stars” for Universal. Deadline broke the news.
Published in 2019, “The Giver of Stars” is “set in Depression-era Kentucky and rooted in true events.” The book “tells the story of a group of extraordinary young women who defy the odds to bring knowledge – and power – to a remote mountain community.”
Alison Owen and Debra Hayward are set to produce for their media production company Monumental Pictures. Moyes is among the project’s exec producers.
“Me Before You,” a romantic drama about a recently-paralyzed man and his caregiver, took in over $208 million worldwide on a budget of $20 million.
Mastretta has directed episodes of “Vida,” “Superstore,” and “Historia de un Crimen: La Busqueda.” Her features include “Everybody Loves Somebody” and “The Hours with You.”
