Emerald Fennell Enlisted by Ana de Armas to Help Write “John Wick” Spinoff “Ballerina”

Another award-winning “Killing Eve” alumna has been tapped to shape an action franchise. The spy thriller’s creator, “Fleabag” breakout Phoebe Waller-Bridge, helped shape the plot of the latest James Bond film, “No Time to Die,” and now the showrunner of “Killing Eve’s” second season, Emerald Fennell, has been tapped to help write “Ballerina,” an upcoming John Wick spinoff starring Ana de Armas.

Fennell is hot off the success of her feature debut, Carey Mulligan-starrer “Promising Young Woman,” which won her an Oscar for best original screenplay and nods for best directing and best picture. It was de Armas who enlisted Fennell’s services. The “Knives Out” actress wanted to be involved in the behind-the-scenes process of the film, which sees her playing a vigilante.

“It was really important for me to hire a female writer, because to that point when I got involved in the project, it was only the director, Len Wiseman, and another guy [Shay Hatten]. And I was like, ‘That’s not going to work.’ So I interviewed, like, five or six female writers. We hired Emerald Fennell, which I was so proud of,” de Armas told Elle.

Fennell is punching up the script. At this point, it’s undetermined whether or not she’ll receive a writing credit.

Up next for Fennell is “Saltburn,” the story of an aristocratic family. “Gone Girl’s” Rosamund Pike is set to topline the pic.

Also an actress, Fennell’s on-screen credits include “The Crown” and “Call the Midwife.” She received an Emmy nod for her depiction of Camilla Parker Bowles in the former.

De Armas’ latest film, action thriller “Gray Man,” launches on Netflix tomorrow, July 15. Her upcoming slate includes “Blonde,” a highly anticipated Marilyn Monroe biopic.
