Emma Stone to Exec Produce “Flicker in the Dark” Series at HBO Max

Stone in "Cruella"

Emma Stone is adding to her off-camera résumé. Riding high on the success of “Cruella” and a sequel to the live-action “101 Dalmatians” prequel being greenlit, the star and exec producer of the Disney pic is developing a new project at HBO Max via Fruit Tree, her production company with “Brigsby Bear” director and husband Dave McCary. They’re bringing a series adaptation of upcoming Stacey Willingham novel “A Flicker in the Dark” to the streamer. Variety broke the news.

Scheduled for publication in the U.S. in January 2022, Willingham’s debut novel tells the story of Chloe Davis, “who was shocked to discover at 12 years old that her own father confessed to the murder of six teenage girls in their small Louisiana town. 20 years later, Chloe is a psychologist in Baton Rouge whose life begins to unravel when local teens start to go missing.”

Morgan Gould is penning the adaptation.

Fruit Tree and A24 are producing for HBO Max. Fruit Tree signed a first-look deal with A24 in 2020. They also have a series in development at Showtime, “The Curse.” In addition to exec producing, Stone will star in the half-hour comedy about a curse that wreaks havoc on a newly married couple who co-star in an HGTV show.

A three-time Oscar nominee, Stone took home the honor in 2017 for her leading role in “La La Land.” She also received nods for “The Favourite” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).”
