Eva Longoria Bringing the Story Behind Flamin’ Hot Cheetos to the Big Screen

Longoria: Fox

Eva Longoria is bringing Richard Montanez’s life story to the big screen. You may not recognize his name, but you’re familiar with the deliciously spicy fruits of his labor: Montanez created Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Deadline confirms that Longoria will direct “Flamin’ Hot” for Fox Searchlight.

Montanez, the son of a Mexican immigrant, was working as a janitor for Frito-Lay when a machine broke, leaving some Cheetos sans their usual cheese powder. He took the plain crunchy snack home and dressed it in spices associated with Mexican street corn. His creation drew enthusiastic responses from everyone who tried it, prompting him to speak with supervisors, who encouraged him to talk to the company prez. “He got a book on marketing from the library, bought his first ever tie for $3, and put samples of his creation in sample bags he made himself” in preparation for the meeting, according to Food & Wine.

“Flamin’ Hot” is a hot commodity. “Longoria reportedly beat out multiple directors for the job after impressing Franklin and Fox with her authentic approach to portraying the inspiring story of Richard and Judy Montanez,” the source details. The “Desperate Housewives” alumna is also attached to helm workplace comedy “24/7” for Universal. She’ll star in the pic alongside Kerry Washington. Her small screen directing credits include “Black-ish,” “The Mick,” and “Jane the Virgin.”
