Babe Nation Creation’s first feature has begun filming, Deadline confirms. The female-driven production company is behind “The Rest of Us,” Aisling Chin-Yee’s directorial debut. Heather Graham stars in the family dramedy.
Penned by Alanna Francis, “Rest of Us” centers on a divorced woman (Graham) who risks further alienating her willful teen daughter (Sophie Nélisse, “The Book Thief”) when she welcomes her late ex’s second wife (Jodi Balfour, “The Crown”) and her young daughter (Abigail Pniowsk, “Arrival”) to move in with them. “The four women must contend with their own grief, truths, flaws, and secrets while ultimately deciding if the past will dictate their future,” the source summarizes.
The project’s producers include Katie Nolan, Lindsay Tapscott, and Emma Fleury.
Chin-Yee previously helmed shorts “Synesthesia” and “Sound Asleep.” Along with actress Mia Kirshner, she co-created #AfterMeToo, a symposium, series, and report that analyzes sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry.
Graham made her own feature directorial debut this year with “Half Magic.” She stars in the comedy about friends who make a pact to be with “good guys only.”
“Hollywood, in general, is run mostly by men, and women’s roles are being told through the perspective of a man,” Graham has said. “There are some very exciting exceptions, but on the whole, most female parts are from the male point of view. As an audience member, I miss seeing things from the female perspective.” She added, “If more women start to write and direct stuff, we can see more roles where women are portrayed as the complicated, complex individuals they are — like in real life.”
