“Hustlers,” “Little Women,” “Booksmart,” and More Earn ReFrame Stamps

"Hustlers"

Of the top 100 films of 2019, 26 received the ReFrame Stamp, a badge that denotes a production was made with a gender-balanced, inclusive cast and crew. This marks a new record, and a 30 percent increase from 2018’s 20 recipients. According to a press release, “Hustlers,” “Little Women,” “Booksmart,” “Captain Marvel,” “Queen & Slim,” and “Frozen II” are among the 2019 ReFrame Stamp awardees.

In order to qualify for a stamp, a film must have employed women in four of these eight fields: writer, director, producer, lead, co-lead, speaking parts, department heads, and crew. Projects that hire women of color in key roles earn extra points. ReFrame uses IMDbPro data to identify which projects are eligible.

ReFrame reports “gains for women in the important roles of director, department heads, and women of color leads and co-leads” across last year’s top films. “In 2019 there were 12 women directors (12 percent) in the top 100 films at the box office as compared to 4 (4 percent) in 2018 — with 4 of those directors being a woman of color,” the press release details. “Additionally, the numbers reveal a 17% decrease in women writers with 23 in 2018 to 19 in 2019. There was an increase from zero to 3 women of color writers in 2019 — one [woman of color] wrote two scripts and is counted once.”

“I see the ReFrame Stamp as an important lever for change to help women and people of color break through the boundaries and level the playing field,” said “Booksmart” director Olivia Wilde. “Stamp criteria helped me focus on who would be best for the job – and I was able to hire an incredibly diverse and balanced crew to curate the environment I always wanted to see on a set.”

Earlier this year ReFrame presented stamps to 21 shows from the 2018-2019 season, including “Fleabag,” “When They See Us,” “GLOW,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” The gender equality coalition also announced a partnership with Delta Airlines. The two organizations have launched in-flight movie and TV channels airing projects that have received the ReFrame Stamp.
