Jessica Chastain will be joining Alanis Obomsawin at this year’s TIFF Tribute Awards. A press release announced that the two-time Oscar nominee has been named as this year’s recipient of the Actor Award. She’s premiering a new film, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” at the Toronto International Film Festival. Obomsawin, whose directing credits include “Jordan River Anderson, The Messenger” and “Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance,” is set to receive the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” sees Chastain portraying late televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, charting her rise, fall, and redemption.
“Jessica has brought to life such strong and inspiring roles for women, from the films that have screened at TIFF such as ‘The Debt,’ ‘Take Shelter,’ ‘The Martian,’ ‘Crimson Peak,’ and ‘Molly’s Game’ to the upcoming World Premiere of ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ at the Festival — she is one of the most respected actors of her generation,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director and Co-Head of TIFF. “Her recent portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker is a testament to her exceptional onscreen presence and talent.”
Previous recipients of the TIFF Tribute Actor Award include Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet.
A long-time champion of inclusivity on-screen and behind the scenes, Chastain has drawn attention to longstanding issues such as the dearth of opportunities for women directors and the lack of fair pay for women of color. She received Oscar nods for “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Help.” “Ava” and “It Chapter Two” are among her more recent credits. Her upcoming slate includes star-studded spy thriller “The 355,” scheduled for release in early 2022.
Titles screening at TIFF this year include Julia Ducournau’s Cannes winner “Titane” and Danis Goulet’s “Night Raiders,” a dystopian sci-fi story that centers on a Cree woman. The festival runs September 8-18.
