“Titane” will be making its North American premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. A press release announced that Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or winner will open the fest’s Midnight Madness section. The Cannes breakout tells the story of a dancer, model, and serial killer with a sexual attraction to cars. Also screening in the Midnight Madness section is Kate Dolan’s “You Are Not My Mother,” an Irish horror pic about a teenage girl who is becoming increasingly concerned about her mother’s strange behavior.
The fest unveiled the lineups for a number of other programs, including TIFF Docs and Contemporary World Cinema. Rebeca Huntt’s “Beba,” a portrait of a first-generation, Afro-Latina activist and New York native, and Liz Garbus’ “Becoming Cousteau,” a tribute to undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, are among the titles set to screen in TIFF Docs. The Contemporary World Cinema slate includes Laura Samani’s “Small Body,” the story of a woman who tries to bring her stillborn baby back to life.
TIFF takes place September 8-18. Previously announced titles include Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” a Western about brothers who run a Montana cattle ranch, and Danis Goulet’s “Night Raiders,” a dystopian sci-fi story that centers on a Cree woman.
