For the second time, a Lynn Shelton film will open the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). The Seattle Times reports that the Seattle filmmaker’s latest movie, “Sword of Trust,” will kick off the 45th edition of SIFF on May 16 with a gala screening. Shelton will be in attendance.
“Sword of Trust” centers on Cynthia (Jillian Bell) and Mary (Michaela Watkins). The former’s deceased grandfather left her one item: an antique sword he believed proved that the South won the Civil War. Cynthia and Mary try to sell the weapon to grouchy pawnshop owner (Marc Maron), and his sidekick (Jon Bass), who find out there’s a black market for this type of war paraphernalia. All four eventually team up to auction the sword off to the highest bidder.
Shelton produced the pic and co-wrote with Mike O’Brien. “Sword of Trust” made its world premiere at SXSW last month and was acquired by IFC Films. A theatrical release is planned for this summer.
Shelton’s “Your Sister’s Sister” opened SIFF 2011. Her other features include “Outside In,” “Laggies” and “Humpday.” Episodes of “GLOW,” “Love,” and “Fresh Off the Boat” are among her TV directing credits.
SIFF will take place May 16-June 9 at venues across Seattle. Its full lineup will be announced May 1. For more information or to purchase passes, head over to SIFF’s website.
