Reese Witherspoon Exec Producing Starz Family Drama from “Queen Sugar’s” Davita Scarlett

Scarlett: Starz

Reese Witherspoon has lined up yet another TV gig. The Oscar-winning actress and rising mogul is developing “Kin,” a Starz family drama from “Queen Sugar” writer Davita Scarlett, via her Hello Sunshine production company. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon and Scarlett will executive produce alongside Hello Sunshine’s Lauren Neustadter.

Developed by Scarlett and Chester Jones III, “Kin” sees three generations of women forced back into each other’s lives when their family’s challenging matriarch returns to town.

“Davita has written a script that is utterly original, complex, and incredibly nuanced. She deftly explores issues around identity and the secrets family members keep to protect themselves and one another,” said Witherspoon. “I’m so excited to team up with Starz to bring these strong, memorable female characters to life on screen.”

“The opportunity to work in partnership with Davita Scarlett as well as Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine on this series is serendipitous,” stated Starz programming prez Carmi Zlotnik. “Hello Sunshine puts women at the forefront of the stories they are telling, and that fits perfectly into Starz’s overall programming strategy to offer compelling content that appeals to female audiences.”

Witherspoon has an array of other television projects on her slate. She’s exec producing and starring in an untitled morning show drama for Apple and “Little Fires Everywhere,” Hulu’s adaptation of Celeste Ng’s bestselling novel. Jennifer Aniston co-stars in the former and Kerry Washington the latter. Witherspoon will also exec produce Amazon’s “Daisy Chain & the Six,” a ’70s-set drama about a rock band. In addition to starring in HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” she exec produces the Liane Moriarty adaptation. Its second season is expected to premiere this summer.

On the big screen, Witherspoon will reprise the role of Elle Woods in MGM’s “Legally Blonde 3,” scheduled for release on February 14, 2020. She’ll potentially star in the adaptation of Gail Honeyman’s  novel “Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine,” a tale of a lonely misfit learning to open her heart. Witherspoon is producing the project, and “The Post” scribe Liz Hannah is writing.

“A Wrinkle in Time” and “Home Again” are among Witherspoon’s most recent screen appearances.

Scarlett scored a Black Reel Award nomination for co-writing “Queen Sugar’s” Season 2 episode “Heritage.” “Leimert Park,” “The Family,” and “Constantine” are among her other credits. She co-created the former, a web series about three friends living together in LA.
