ReFrame is spotlighting 33 shows featuring gender-balanced casts and creative teams. A press release announced that “Euphoria,” “Normal People,” “Never Have I Ever,” “Star Trek: Picard,” and “Watchmen” are among the series from the 2019-2020 season to receive a ReFrame TV Stamp. Overall, there has been a 57 percent increase in awardees since last year, which saw 21 shows receiving the badge. ReFrame, a coalition working for gender equality in the media, announced the news in a press release.
The ReFrame TV Stamp is presented to television productions that hire female-identifying individuals in at least four of these eight critical roles: writer, director, showrunner, producer, lead, season regulars, department heads, and crew. Extra points are granted when women of color are hired in key positions. In order to determine who gets the honor, ReFrame analyzes IMDbPro data from the past year’s 100 most popular scripted shows.
“We are excited to see a significant 57% increase in the number of shows that have earned the ReFrame Stamp this season, and believe these criteria are driving hiring decisions both in front of, and behind, the camera” said ReFrame co-founders Keri Putnam and Cathy Schulman. “From Regina King leading ‘Watchmen,’ to ReFrame Rise fellow Hanelle Culpepper making history as the first woman to direct a pilot or debut episode of a Starfleet series in the franchise’s 53-year history [with ‘Star Trek: Picard’], women continue to make bold moves, and we’re heartened to see a broadened field of Stamp awardees.”
“Gender balance was a priority for us when crewing up ‘Picard’ and reflects the core values of the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” Culpepper explained. “It may seem daunting to take that first step, to dig deeper than the usual folks in your Rolodex, but the rewards that come from different perspectives and ideas are worth it. And it opens your circle which makes achieving gender balance the next time easier.”
Other newly-stamped shows include “Batwoman,” “The Great,” and “Unorthodox.” “Glow,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “Orange Is the New Black” are among the repeat honorees — i.e. shows that have previously received the badge in addition to being recognized this year.
ReFrame Stamp criteria are developed with the consultation of ReFrame Ambassadors, producers, and other industry figures. As show business evolves, the criteria will too. Recipients can display the badges in their credits and on their marketing/publicity materials and websites. ReFrame also accepts submissions for series outside the top 100, and showcases these recipients on its website and IMDb.

That’s why I’m proud to be a ReFrame Ambassador and support this industrywide initiative providing tangible and measurable solutions,” said producer Bruna Papandrea, whose show “Big Little Lies” received a stamp for its second season. “And I know it’s more than just being a voice, but also leading by example and ensuring my own shows, such as ‘Big Little Lies,’ meet the Stamp requirements.”
