Trailer Watch: Jessica Barden Joins a Scrap Metal Crew to Pay for College in Nicole Riegel’s “Holler”

"Holler": Level Forward

Jessica Barden finds herself torn between her dreams, family, loyalty, and the law in “Holler,” Nicole Riegel’s feature debut. Set in southern Ohio, the drama tells the story of Ruth (Barden), a bright teen whose college aspirations lead down a dangerous road.

A new trailer for the critically acclaimed pic sees one of Ruth’s teachers urging her to pursue a local IT program. “What if I don’t want to work in IT?” she asks. Convinced it’s a “more practical” route for “a young lady in [her] situation” than college, he’s unwilling to offer any other advice.

Ruth’s mother (Pamela Adlon) is in prison, leaving Ruth in the care of her older brother (Gus Halper) who doesn’t make enough money to support them. College seems like a distant dream, and only a little less so when Ruth receives an acceptance letter: getting in is just the beginning of her journey. She needs to let go of her guilt about leaving her brother behind and figure out a way to pay for tuition. Along with her brother, she joins a scrap metal crew to earn some cash and quickly realizes that the gig isn’t strictly legal.

“When I was a high school senior, I had a meeting with my guidance counselor. She told me that I would probably never go to college, and it was one of the most discouraging things that I think can happen to a young person,” Riegel explained in our exclusive “Holler” featurette. The writer-director emphasized, “I want multiple generations to see this film and leave the film wanting to encourage girls to dream and have more.”

Best known for Channel 4/Netflix dark comedy “”The End of the F***ing World,” Barden’s other credits include “Penny Dreadful” and “The Lobster.” She’ll co-star with Toni Collette in “Pieces of Her,” a psychological thriller about a random act of violence that sets off an unexpected chain of events. Minkie Spiro (“Fosse/Verdon”) is directing the Netflix series. You can see Barden next in Kelly Oxford’s feature debut, “Pink Skies Ahead,” premiering May 8 on MTV and Pop TV.

“Holler” hits theaters and VOD June 11.
